Medical Weight Loss:

The doctors at BMI of Texas understand that weight loss surgery is not the best choice for everyone. We pride ourselves on providing patients with information on a variety of proven weight loss methods to help them achieve their goals in their fight against obesity. Dr. Jennifer Seger, a Board Certified Family Medicine Physician, is now offering medical weight loss consultations to BMI patients who want to lose weight and improve their health, but don’t think surgery is the best option for them.

Our medical weight loss program will begin with a thorough patient interview with Dr. Seger. The first consultation is to discuss and pinpoint the development of obesity for the patient and also the factors that may be contributing to it. We realize that obesity is multifactorial and can result from a combination of underlying diseases, genetics, medications, diet, activity and the mind itself. Dr. Seger’s specialty training provides her with the skills, knowledge and desire to focus on each of these factors.

After a thorough discussion of the patient’s history, a focused physical exam and lab work will be conducted, unless the patient has had labs done by another physician recently.

Additionally, Dr. Seger will help determine an exercise program for each patient that is realistic and effective. Understanding that each patient has unique obstacles and abilities is crucial to creating a successful fitness plan. Occasionally, Dr. Seger will prescribe medicines to help with appetite suppression, insulin resistance and mood stabilization. These medications are monitored on a monthly basis.

We highly recommend each patient have a metabolic and physical fitness assessment by a licensed trainer. This will help determine a target heart rate for future work outs and also, the trainer can recommend a realistic, safe program to maximize results. This assessment can be done at a patient’s current fitness center, or we can refer you to one near our weight loss center.

After completing an initial consult with Dr. Seger, patients will then meet with our Registered Dietician, Jennifer Bowling, for a complete nutrition assessment and to develop a customized meal plan that meets the patient’s individual needs. The patient will need to keep a food journal for at least 3 days prior to this meeting and bring it in with them, so the dietician can see exactly what the patient’s diet usually includes.

Dr. Seger is currently accepting patients with most major insurance plans. These include: Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, Humana and Unicare. Affordable pricing is available for private pay patients.
